Chapter One
Asking God for A Sign
As far back as I remember, I always asked for a sign. A person can always ask God for confirmation to make us discern the right from the wrong, and that’s basically what the first half is about. The Gospel uses a source that views miracles as manifestations of power and, thus, as legitimating credentials for the revealer, understood as a “theios Anthropos.”
Although the Evangelists adopted the signs-source, the view that miracles are intrusions of the divine into the human world which produce physiological changes or supply material gifts apart from the person of the revealer was discarded. Instead, the miracles are symbols of the giving of the revealer himself, indicating that “the activity of the revealer is a disturbance of what is familiar to the world.”
Chapter Three
The Different Layers, Stages of Life
When God Is the cause, there are no coincidences
Biblical coincidences can confirm belief in a personal God.
The word coincidence is used only once in the Bible, and that was by Jesus Himself when He was teaching the parable of the Good Samaritan. In Luke 10:31, Jesus said, “And by a coincidence a certain priest was going down in that way and having seen him, he passed over on the opposite side.” It is translated from the Greek word synkyrian, which is a combination of two words syn and kurios. Syn means “together with,” and kurious means “supreme in authority.” A biblical definition then would be “what occurs together by God’s providential arrangement of circumstances.”
After reading Dr. Bernard D. Beitman’s book, Connecting with Coincidence (HCI, 2016), where he expands on the perspective of a person of faith when it comes to coincidences which he defines as “a remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances without apparent causal connection.” Here, he limits his arguments for this viewpoint to examples of what some would call coincidence in the Judeo-Christian Old and the Christian New Testaments.
Chapter Eight
The Deep Drop
Are you walking in faith, or are you walking by sight? How would you answer that? Do you walk according to God’s will, purpose, and plan for your life? Are you just walking, trusting, and hoping things will turn out for the better? God wants us to walk trusting Him for every single thing, and He desires that you and I walk by faith; we either walk by faith or by sight; most people have to see it to believe it. We all have moments in life when we want to hear God’s voice or receive some definite sign from him regarding a relationship, a pending marriage, a business decision, a career choice, or a major expenditure. You know our decisions matter.
We make decisions, our decisions turn around and make us, and we face many questions throughout our lifetime. Should I get married? If the answer is yes, then who should I marry? Should I go to college? I have a good job; shall I take the new job, or should I hold on to the One I have? Is there any way to be 100% certain about God’s Will when making a major choice in life or college? Remember, we walk by faith, not by sight.
